Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the media space as an element of the modern Russian society’s collective memory about the soviet past. According to the J. Assman concept, collective memory is divided into cultural and communicative. The first part includes films and programs within the framework of the traditional media and they can be classified according to two criteria: substantial and emotional. The first criterion differentiates products of educational and entertaining nature. The second criterion, an emotional one, allows one to highlight critical and nostalgic trends in mass culture. In the second trend one can include narratives created in the World Wide Web. In the Web there is a wide spectrum of opinions on the Soviet Union, yet among the dominant views one can distinguish an “ideological” and a “nostalgic” ones. The situation can be described as “the war of memories,” in which an active part is played not only by the state authorities and members of the academic community, but also by a substantial number of people, who did not use to have a platform for representation of their views.
