Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to present Bourdieu's understanding of the art field, focusing on the literary field, i.e. on the historical genesis and understanding of the dynamics of this field. The terms reactionand refractionenable a clearer distinction of both characteristics and problems within Bourdieu's view of the art field. We indicate some key points in Bourdieu's view of historical processes that enabled the autonomy of the field. We believe that the problems of the history and dynamics of the art field are manifested in the relationship between structural-historical circumstances and the position of works of art within the structure of the field. Furthermore, we draw attention to the problematic nature of persistent highlighting of “vertical” divisions within the field. Bourdieu’s comparison between the field of power and the field of art is the basic framework of our analysis, but it also represents the limitation of its scope. The consequence of such an approach is field dynamics reduced to conflicts between the actors, which can be limited to several dimensions – economic and non-economic (symbolic) capital, old and new generation, central and peripheral position (in the field of power), etc.
