Summary/Abstract: This paper considers the role of local community in the development of tourist industry in small towns. What is the function of the local community in city brands construction and creation of museums and other tourist attractions? What is the influence of such innovations on the social life of a small city? The authors analyze the case of successful development of tourism in the city of Myshkin and discern several strategies of tourist experience production adopted by the local officials and activists. Special attention is paid to the role of the local community in implementation of these strategies by the political leaders and to the tactics of presentation of this community. The combination of different strategies creates spatial, symbolic and economic conditions favorable for the development of tourism, but at the same time entails ambiguous consequences for the local community.
