Summary/Abstract: The article compares two portraits of Henry Miller created by Czesław Miłosz. The first one presented in the 1940s shows Miller as a literary rebel whose critique of traditional novel is of European descent. It also points out numerous parallels in their perception of contemporary America. As a reader of The Air-conditioned Nightmare, Miłosz gains new perspectives in diagnosing the American postwar society. However, he does not always reveal Miller’s heritage in his own thoughts about the New World. The latter one from Visions over San Francisco Bay puts aside Miller as a commentator of American culture, and locates him in the context of the Beat Generation movement. Unpublished letters of the two and some new biographical data throw new light on Miłosz’s reevaluation of Miller both as a writer and an intellectual.
