Summary/Abstract: The article discusses some problems of benchmarking as a method for elaboration the enterprises’ activity. The origin and growth history of benchmarking and its importance to increase the business competitiveness is revealed. The article presents definitions of various authors and identifies fundamental benchmarking features. As well we point at specific benefits from the method implementation, main principles and precondition for effective realization in the corporate practice. The necessity to utilize this important management tool to assess the level of development, the strengths and weaknesses, and to reach the “best practices” in the industry, in the business area or individual business processes, is highlighted.
