Summary/Abstract: This article presents findings of a case study of alternative partial downshifting lifestyle practices in contemporary Ukraine. It is based on materials of personal interviews conducted in the city of Kyiv. Partial downshifting stems from choice of a freelance job and appears as one of the most popular strategies of transition to alternative lifestyles. This transition is a deliberate choice based on revision of values, deliberate income reduction, decrease of working hours and increase of free time, changes in consumption patterns, and so on. Findings of the case study show that the main reasons of partial downshifting are dissatisfaction with one’s life in general and his or her job in particular, lack of free time for oneself and family, and desire to be more independent.
