Summary/Abstract: The aim of the author is to show that the idea for the beginning of the Bulgarian state and its actual formation are a concept and an event whose interpretation changes depending on the condition and the needs of Bulgarian society and primarily on the governing and educational elite. Moreover, in distinct historical periods in the two neighbouring countries Bulgaria and Byzantium, the concept and the actual event were described and interpreted in accordance with the respective sociopolitical situation. The research has been carried out on the basis of three preliminary stipulations: 1. .State tradition. underlies not only the actual formation of the state but also the state idea. 2. .Myth. is used as a cover term for the full or partial unreality of events, dates and persons with mythological, legendary and folklore origin. 3. The recently published Russian texts entitled Shan Kaza Dastan and Dzhagfar Triha are not considered because of doubts in their antiquity.
