Summary/Abstract: The postmodern paradigm brings about a new understanding of history by highlighting its provisional character and questioning the apparent neutrality, objectivity and comprehensiveness which historical writings lay claim to. Historians, theoreticians and novelists of the era talk of the ‘end of history’ understood as a sum of truthful statements about the past and draw attention to the narrative, ideological and discursive dimensions of history. Historiography entails selecting and sorting the traces of the past, endowing events of the past with meaning, interpretation of the ensuing facts and the creation of a narrative by means of tropes and imagination. Consequently, historical writings have much in common with literary writings.
