Summary/Abstract: In this article the question on the nature of the media and their role in modern society is considered as one of the major problems of modern philosophy and media theory. The author makes distinctions between the terms media, media reality and mass media and looks into the issue of the real and the reality of the media. It is asserted that the utopian media (or the virtual media) may serve as the real media in terms of the range of opportunities. The author raises the problem of distortion of utopia in the media and concludes that the return of the media to their destination, i.e. to be a mediator between subject and the world, matter and idea, is only possible through the reanimation of utopia by its practical implementation.
