Summary/Abstract: Historically, Azerbaijan had multi-ethnic population, and different nations and peoples lived in peace and friendship in the country. According to 2009 population census, ethnic minorities, national minorities and ethnic groups are around 8.4 percent of the country’s total population. Over 15 newspapers and magazines are published in the languages of ethnic communities living in Azerbaijan, and over 30 ones in Russian. Local TV and radio broadcasting channels operate in five regions densely populated by ethnic minorities. It is for more than 2000 years that the Jews have lived in Azerbaijan. Three Jewish communities - Mountain Jews, Ashkenazi Jews and Georgian Jews reside in the country. Overall, the number of Jews in the country is 16,000. 11 000 of them are Mountain Jews, of which 6,000 live in Baku, 4,000 in Guba, and 1,000 in other cities. Then 4,300 Ashkenazi Jews live in Azerbaijan, mostly in Baku and Sumgait. There are about 700 Georgian Jews in the country. Several synagogues of Mountain Jews are located in Baku, Oghuz, Guba. Girmizi Gasaba (Red Settlement) in Guba is the only location in the entire post-Soviet region densely populated by Jews.
