Summary/Abstract: The article considers how the original code of U. Eco manifests itself in Akunin’s story “Before the End of the World” and how it affects the genre structure, chronotope, and characters of the detective story. A conclusion is made that the “alien” original code contributes to the formation of a philosophical plane in the secondary text, which complicates considerably the ideological content of the novel and takes it out of mass literature.
