Summary/Abstract: Social transformation is conceived as a structural change of social relationships, while modernization as a change in broadly defined culture, the connecting link being the change in the institutions. The state socialist social structure was not able to stimulate further progress of modernization. The lag in modernization still remains the crucial problem of the post–communist societies. The success or failure in modernization will be the decisive criterion for the evaluation of the results of the post–communist social transformation. In the conditions of a gradual increase of social differentiation, the optimal prospects are connected with strategies able to create a dynamic social equilibrium stimulating further modernization without exacerbating potential social conflicts.
