Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to one of the most complicated problems in the studies of the Spanish Renaissance, which is the problem of whether there was or not the Renaissance in Spain. The article presents the basic ways of interpreting artistic life on the Iberian Peninsula during the European Renaissance, proposed by F. de Onis, J.M. Valverde, J.F. López, and A. Castro. Particular attention is paid to the periodization and essential features of the Renaissance in Spain, as considered in the works of J.A. Maravall, J.M. Pelaéz, M. Pelayo, and M. Batllori. It is concluded that the Renaissance in Spain is a contradictory phenomenon and is interpreted differently by different historians, which makes it an interesting topic for further investigation.
