Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the intellectual biography of French medievalist J.-C. Schmitt. Here, we retrace the formation of his views in the context of the “anthropological turn” in historical science, describe his scientific work, and show the main fields of his research. Through the prism of Schmitt’s work we demonstrate actual problems of historical anthropology and modern historiography.
