Summary/Abstract: The article presents the little known aesthetic views on education of Johann F. Herbart (1776–1841). In contrast to Friedrich Schiller’s idealist vision of aesthetic education, in which art assumes a truly vital role, Herbart places the emphasis on beauty (from the Greek kallos). This is why his conception could be referred to as kallism. The text consists of three parts. In the first one, Herbart’s theory of education is being put forward; its most important element is the shaping of the aesthetic vision. The second part outlines the vision of a human being, which is based on an aesthetically understood human nature. Its most characteristic trait is the process of one’s formation within the moral sphere. The third part points to the concept of education towards virtue as the leading idea of Herbart’s theory of education. The goal, according to the German pedagogue, is accomplishing harmony between intellect and will. The classical notions of ethical beauty have been expressed in this harmony since antiquity.
