Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a theoretical framework of the role the minority languages play in the process of intercultural education. In most European countries the mother tongues of the minorities are allowed to be studied in the school programs and the positive effect of the mother tongue education on the intellectual development of the minority children can be observed. In addition, the difficulties of the implementation of the minority languages in the school system are discussed.
