Summary/Abstract: It was on April 20th, 1944, that the Jews of Sighet were displaced into a ghetto by Horthy’s authorities. The area was limited to four streets. The same day, 140 prominent members of the Jewish community were taken to the synagogue of the town. In the ghetto, each room sheltered 15 to 24 individuals. By May 8th, no less than 56 cases of typhoid fever were reported. Between May 16th and 22nd, the 12.749 Jews of Sighet were deported to Auschwitz, in four transports. Elie Wiesel was one of them.
