Summary/Abstract: The authors of the article give a critical analysis of the essay evaluation criteria used in the final lower secondary school examinations in the years 2002–2011. Subsequently they present the attempts at preparing a holistic scale of essay evaluation undertaken at the Educational Research Institute. The attempts eventually resulted in the implementation of a significant modification in the essay evaluation criteria, which provided an inspiration for the team working on the modernization of the final general lower secondary school of Polish language examination.
