Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to describe student abilities to use basic indicators of text segmentation. The author pays attention in particular to two text categories: paragraph and meta-text, because appropriate text segmentation and an indication of the relation between its parts can help the reader to interpret text. An analysis of 500 texts written by 10-year-old students makes it possible to state that almost a half the students were not aware that the application of meta-language and appropriate textual and graphic organisation of paragraphs can improve the effectiveness of their self expression. Noting particular needs of students might be an appropriate stimulus for teachers to use suitable classroom intervention.
