Summary/Abstract: The closure of the Polish theatre in Vilnius after the January uprising (1863) is one of the most widely known facts about the city's history of theatre. Almost every publication about Vilnius theatre history is based on it. However, what were the circumstances of this event, what happened backstage? Is the story about shutting down the Polish theatre in Vilnius really that well-known? What events besides January's uprising, and what other facts and circumstances led to the absence of Polish theatre in Vilnius for almost half of the century? The text, which intends to take a new look at the legend of the theatre's closure, as well as at the fact of its absence, relies on sources and comparative analysis.
