Summary/Abstract: The essence of life and moral attitude of Polish landowners in the lands bordering the Ukraine was patriotism, which manifested itself chiefly in the defence of their heritage and a belief in their special mission and exceptional place in society. Maria Rodziewiczówna, once a very popular Polish writer, lived in these Borderlands. The aim of this article is to remind us of this now forgotten writer - her novels, her social and patriotic works and her life in a real Polish manor. The author also discusses the values which were important for Polish landowners’, and for which M. Rodziewiczówna sacrificed her life.
