Summary/Abstract: The discovery of a fresco painting cycle in the Dura-Europos synagogue raised many questions among researchers: for what reason was the Second Commandment broken here? What are the stylistic and iconographic sources of the Dura-Europos paintings? What influence might this painting cycle have exerted on later Jewish and Christian art? The paper attempts to answer these and a number of other questions. The existence of Jewish visual art is considered in the context of the revision of the general outline of Jewish history in the Mishnah’s period.
