Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the modern historiography of Russia and Kazakhstan on the issue of functions carried out by the institution of biys in the Kazakh traditional society. The studies of the internal and foreign policy of the Kazakh Khanate allow concluding that biys did not only form a connecting link between the structural levels of the Kazakh society, but also enabled its development and strengthening. It was emphasized that biys managed to become the power respected by both common nomads and leaders of large tribal alliances.
