The competitiveness of trans-border regions in the European Union

Summary/Abstract: The research objective of this article relates to the competitiveness of trans-border regions in the European Union. The main objective of this analysis is the identification of factors shaping the competitiveness of the cross-border regions with reference to the average value of the index of competitiveness, in the different areas of the EU. Data source selection included programming documents drawn up at the regional level of the EU. Descriptive statistics, including a tabular description and the dynamics of the phenomenon, were used in the analysis. In regards to the research problem identified in the article, the spatial variation of regional competitiveness index (RCI) was analysed, which allowed for setting out the distance of cross border areas from the average value of the index of competitiveness at NUTS 2 regions in the EU. The results of carried out research allowed for drawing conclusions on factors shaping the competitiveness of cross-border regions.
