Summary/Abstract: In the paper, we treat international competitiveness (IC) as a catalyst of productivity. We build a theoretical model of economic development where IC interacts with classical factors of productivity. The model shows that the components of IC enhance a nation’s productivity but they are not consumed when interacting with production factors. We also show that a country’s productivity gain due to IC depends both on the IC level and the level of physical capital per worker. We estimate the theoretical model using panel data euro zone countries in the years 2006-2011.
