Ornaments and Variancy in Bulgarian Traditional Dance

Summary/Abstract: The study traces the role of ornaments and variance in structuring of folk dances. On the examples from traditional dance culture of the village of Gorny Bogrov, Sofia district, in different situations the development of dance forms from simple to complex is being presented. The appearance of ornament is discussed and its development into a new structural unit with relative independence called variation. The development of the dance form is connected to the role of men in the creation of forms in Bulgarian holiday horo (round-ring-chain-dance), which is a result from the strife towards originality and a fruit of a ripen new feeling of the performer. The significance of the instrumental music for the development of the round-ringchain- dance has also been defined. Another stylistic feature and a factor of bringing forth of variations is improvisation, which has been related to as one of the main structuring elements of dance.
