Summary/Abstract: Ornamentation is one of the most important stylistic features of the Rhodopa Folk Music. Its significance is greater than developing musical structure, and its functions are diverse and to a great extent different from the functions of ornamentation in West-European professional music. They are typical of both the structuring of the components of music matter and in a broader sense. It is of special significance to emphasise the style-formative and variant-creating factor of ornamentation, since this is relevant to establishing its identity. In chronological aspect the ornamentation have kept their functions to a great extent, but new ones have appeared as well. This is especially important for the professional musical pieces founded on folklore. It can be argued that in this sense the ornamentation has acquired especially great significance, since aesthetic factors have also come into play. These judgements are in favour of the necessity for deeper and extended study of this phenomenon.
