Summary/Abstract: The paper considers adverbs as a part of speech. Criteria for their attribution to this grammatical class are revealed. Difficulties associated with the description of the system of adverbs in the ancient languages are discussed. The process of pragmaticalization of adverbs is analyzed. An attempt is made to describe the system of adverb-based discourse markers in Sanskrit. It is proved that a text in the ancient language, such as Manusmṛti, can be regarded as a discourse component. Since words may alter their functions over time, it is concluded that there are multifunctional words in Sanskrit.
