Summary/Abstract: The article presents an ethnological analysis of the construction of a mythical figure - that of the famous Bulgarian football player Georgi Asparuhov, known as Gundi. The author investigates the political, social, and ethno-cultural background which brought this myth into existence, as well as the personal characteristics of the mythologized hero. Of course, a central dimension of the analysis is the attitude of the Bulgarian football fans towards the football game and specifically towards Georgi Asparuhov who played in the team of „Levski” during 1950s and 1960s.The author analyzes also the function of the myth and its impact on the Bulgarian cultural space and specifically on people addicted to the football game in the last half century. The aim of the analysis is to demonstrate that myth-making is possible also in post-modern era, and that it is driven more by social conditions and emotions, instead of religion and superstitions. Moreover, the author argues that it is impossible to confront a myth with arguments coming from science or facts.
