No Stars on the Political Sky. The Crisis of Democratic Leadership

Summary/Abstract: An essential element of any democracy is the political leadership. Moreover - without such leadership no democracy is possible. Political leadership is democratic when it is not based on the arbitrariness of the leader but is subject to the rule of the law. Political leadership, subject to the law is a democratic leadership. The crisis of the democratic leadership is manifested in several directions. Firstly it is the contradiction between the role of leader in elitist democracy and in the current egalitarian and populist moment. Secondly democratic leadership is threatened by the crisis of the representation, political participation and deliberation. Democratic leadership is threatened by the clash of conflicting principles of democracy. Finally, democratic leadership is hampered by conflicting trends of counter-democracy and post-democracy.
