Summary/Abstract: The article provides an overview of selected aspects of the EU food security and factors affecting it. In the first section, the evolution of food security and its pillars are discussed. The second section covers selected factors affecting food security, including self-sufficiency, food safety, food losses and waste. The author concludes that despite the food security assurance in European Union, there is a need for actions to improve it at national as well EU level.
