Summary/Abstract: Examples of the distinction between artists and craftsmen, though expressly declared in the Polish-Lithuanian state, can hardly be found until as late as the 18th century, although lawsuits defending the rights of artists demonstrate that the differentiation of artists and craftsmen existed in society. The production of art became viewed in a different light only in the period of the Enlightenment; nevertheless, artists themselves did not receive a better estimation. In terms of their income and wealth, the position of artists living in Vilnius varied, but it was similar to that of craftsmen. This demonstrates a similar valuation of their products. Among the better-off artists were those who had additional sources of income from activities not related with art. Artists enjoyed an exceptional treatment in local communities, but like craftsmen they - with rare exceptions - did not belong to the ruling elite.
