Summary/Abstract: In this article, we attempt to discuss three historical versions of the principle of economy proposed by three Polish economists of midwar period – Edward Taylor, Leopold Caro, and Leon Władysław Biegeleisen compared to Oskar Lange. The first author proposed to divide the discussed principle in two separate principles – one underlyining maximilization of benefits and the other – focused on minimalization of costs. In this interpretation the principle of economy has a subjective character. In its second version, the principle of economy appears alongside critics of homo oeconomicus concept. L. Caro attempted to demonstrate that this principle was contrary to ethics. In the third version, principle of economy is relativised to a given economic model, in which it applicates objectively. L.W. Biegeleisen also divided this principle into positive and negative. In the summary author will propose a potential possibilities of application of these conclusions into modern social economy and cooperatives.
