Summary/Abstract: The result of the British referendum came as a surprise to everyone, but the British themselves seemed to be the most surprised of all. The British vote in favour of leaving the EU can be blamed for “an earthquake” not only on world markets and in European politics, but also within the major British political parties, as it is bound to exert a profound impact on their future as well as the future of the EU. The crisis following the June referendum will have repercussions for the British party system and the debate on Brexit has brought a new take on the “old” British socio-political cleavage, namely Euroscepticism.
