Summary/Abstract: The present research analyses the content of the terms palatal and palatalized consonants. Their interpretations the linguistic literature in English, Bulgarian and Romanian are compared. The debate around the existence of soft consonants in the phonetic systems of the Bulgarian and the Romanian languages is traced back, as well as the terminological diversity in their denomination.
