Summary/Abstract: A bird’s eye view of the concept of music that we construct on the historical and geographical levels also includes the semantic content of the term „music.“ It reveals the exceptional difficulties we face in trying to reach a general (global) understanding of music, as well as highlighting the difficulties in translating not only the word itself, but also the entire semantic sphere accompanying it: „musician,“ „music making,“ „musical culture,“ „musicality,“ „musicology,“ and other such terms. Postmodernism’s deconstructive approach in principle rejects a general definition of music. The definition of music from an opposing (i.e. constructive) point of view could be formulated as follows: music is a series of sounds, noises and pauses created by a human being which are intended to be perceived by human hearing and which are organized into mathematically continuous scales. This is only one possible systematic model for defining music which assumes the existence of alternative models that are suitable to other goals, including the model of deconstruction. This systematic model can successfully overcome formal logic’s limitations in terms of the emptiness of the most general concepts and the difficulty of using them as the subjects of logical investigations: the elements of the system are at first viewed as lacking content, similar to mathematical objects. Here the elements of the system are at first only functional spaces (fields) upon which concrete and actual musical content is later „projected.”
