Summary/Abstract: An Attempt to Thematically Systematize Lexicographical Units in the Dictionaire de musique (2, 1705) by Sébastien de Brossard (1655–1730) and to Quantify the Classes Formed The author of this study has worked for nearly 20 years (including performance experience) on the history, theory and practice of baroque music, focusing particularly on the French contribution. As his basic reference source, he uses the Dictionaire de musique, contenant une explication des termes grecs, italiens, latins (2, 1705), written by the French clergyman, intellectual, writer, teacher, enlightener, musician (conductor, composer, historian and theoretician), bibliophile and lexicographer Sébastien de Brossard (1655–1730). He has translated and extensively annotated this work in its entirety, using a copy of the second edition from 1705, the most valuable and reliable in terms of content. He is now seeking financial support to publish his Bulgarian translation, which is only the second one translation the world following A. Gruber’s English version, which is based on the slightly smaller first edition from 1703. Taking his cue from a remark by de Brossard himself (“Alphabetical order has often forced me to break up into many articles that which methodologically should be united in a single one entry”), Konov has made the world’s first attempt to thematically reorganize de Brossard’s Dictionary of Music, systematizing the lexicographical units into zones (spheres) of knowledge contained therein and quantifying them into classes of terms created by Konov. The most important lexicographical units (547) are systematized into 12 classes, which are further divided into 33 subclasses. This quantification into classes sheds light on the extent and character of musical terminology at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries and emphasizes the most important aspects of musical theory and practice in France during the reign of the Sun King, revealing the musical lexicon that was dominant „then and there.“ Section by section, Konov analyzes the professional and historical reasons behind certain aspects of knowledge, thus shedding light not only on the specific historical-evolutionary parameters and interdependences between theory and practice, but also on de Brossard as a musician, theoretician, lexicographer and teacher.
