Summary/Abstract: The prime period of the Polish Middle Ages is that of Jagellonian times when Poland, as a result of its union with Lithuania, formed the Republic of Two Nations and became one of the greatest European powers, playing a significant role in her cultural mission regarding the new nations within the borders of the union. It was then that intellectual culture reached a high standard, which enabled the forming of the basic ideas of freedom and tolerance, pluralism and openness. Incorporated into life, they formed national awareness and forever defined the character of Polish identity. The sources of this culture show them to be an elaboration of consequence and a coherent socio-political idea; today too, they have the force to inspire and may participate in the understanding and evolution of national identity, to which only one needs to aspire.
