Summary/Abstract: The Gulf of Aden represents a strategic issue for the international community, as itsgeographical position is fundamental as the major trade maritime route. About 50 percent of the worldcontainer ships pass through the Gulf of Aden each year, 80 percent of those cargos coming fromEurope. For this reason, the piracy issue affecting Somalia is a problem affecting EU member states’security and economy. This paper is focused on the comprehensive approach acted by the EuropeanUnion, with a special attention on proposing the implementation of programs against illegal fishingand waste dumping in order to fight Somali piracy. The evaluation of the military mission offers anoverview on a solution for the near future, while the training missions and the development fundssustain the build-up of national tools and focus on the solving of the roots of the issue.
