Summary/Abstract: The subject of research is the case of lexical synonymia in the communist press published in the Polish language in Soviet Ukraine in the years 1918–1939 – "sowiecki" // "radziecki" (as equivalents of the Russian "sowietskij"). The lexeme "radziecki'" was propagated from the top-down by leading Polish communists residing in the Soviet state, and as early as 1919 it appeared in the main periodicals. Frequency analysis shows that "sowiecki" dominatedin the press in 1920–1925, but as of 1926 "radziecki" gained an advantage, while it became prevailing from 1930. The elimination of the adjective "sowiecki" from communist publication practices was probably connected to its negative connotations in political propaganda and public reception in the Second Polish Republic. This line was continued by the communist authorities of the post-war Polish People’s Republic, they forced "radziecki" while the competing word "sowiecki" was at that time used by the opposition.
