POLISH HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE BEGINNING OF 21 ST CENTURY. AN ATTEMPT OF BALANCE

Summary/Abstract: In the centre of interest the author puts the condition of contemporary Polish historiography, its challenges and he proposes a thesis that Polish historiography is in the state of deep transformation which is a result of inner alterations of historiography itself. It is also the effect of significant reevaluations in the relations between academic historiography and social life which in turn correspond with the changes of the place of historical knowledge in the intellectual instrumentation of modern man. From the point of view of the West, Polish historiography seems more anachronistic, less open to a dialogue with other disciplines of the humanities, dominated by political history. There exists a crisis of academic historiography and a diminishing role of professional historians in the creation of socially accepted visions of the past. From the view of countries of the former Communist camp, one may however say that Polish historiography is less ethnocentric, more open to influences from outside and Polish historians resolutely take up topics which until now were in the sphere of a national sacrum and were a taboo for years.
