Local Digital Libraries

Summary/Abstract: We can define local digital libraries or Digital Libraries of Local Heritage as complete and organized historical and biographical information and cultural heritage of a certain geographical region in digital form. These usually derive from the Local History Collections selected materials, which are digitized or born-digital. This paper is investigat- ing the relationship between local cultural heritage, as a whole cultural heritage of particular geographical region and time period, with digitization and digital libraries. De- fining local digital libraries and the basic principles of cre- ation and organization of digital collections, we are aiming to more precisely appoint their position towards other digi- tal libraries, archives or repositories, as well towards the projects of mass digitization. The perspectives of local digi- tal libraries usage is presented through discussion of vari- ous types of digital libraries of local heritage, and also through analyses of current digitization of local history col- lections kept in Serbian libraries.
