Summary/Abstract: This note discusses selected Irish English constructions with the preposition on (influenced by Irish ar). The Irish variety of English (referred to as Irish English, Hiberno-English or, especially in older sources, Anglo-Irish) shows numerous lexical and structural influences caused by the Irish (Celtic) substrate, prepositional constructions of the type presented below are regarded as calques from Irish, comparable structures are attested in other Celtic Englishes, and may be hence considered as one of the diagnostic properties of substratal influence in these varieties [in the sense of Tristram, 1997, p. 43], or as transfer phenomena [in the sense of Filppula et al., 2008, p. 200].
