Dvelopment and improvement of the European union regional policy

Summary/Abstract: The European Union regional policy goes over a number of stages and variations in the time. The main objective of the paper is to study and assess up to date development and improvement of the European Union regional policy and to display the main challenges ahead of its future development. For that purpose the main stages in which regional policy development has passed over are examined. The transition from using of autonomous national policies for regional policy towards working out a common regional policy in the Community, towards implementing and development of processes of coordination, is presented. At one following stage the transition towards introducing and applying of the strategic planning in the European Union and in particular in the applied regional policy is presented. Directions for future development of the regional planning in the Union are worked out as well. The thesis which is defended in the paper is that without working out of integral system of plans and development of coordination and interaction between them, the realization of the applied regional policy will result in failure.
