Summary/Abstract: The tradition of Western museums, ways of organizing their displays and the attitude towards spectators are estimated today in many different ways. It seems almost impossible to talk about the uniform collective audience, the identity of a statistical spectator or a "typical" museum visitor - most likely they reveal the heterogeneous character of the institution. This article discusses some anthropological and sociological characteristics of museum visitors as well as presents the basic differences of these characteristics with regard to estimation of collecting and arranging displays of art objects. Here the museum is interpreted as an institution of modernity, without any accent on ancient, modern or contemporary art expositions.
