Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to present an alternative Spanish view on the goals and methods of the functioning of democratic policy and democracy in times of crisis, outlining ways for democracy to overcome the effects of the current crisis. Neoliberal economic policy undermines democracy in Europe by dismantling the welfare state. Meanwhile, democracy cannot function properly without social justice or sustainable development - and civil Europe cannot exist without democracy, argues Pablo Iglesias Turrión, one of the most prominent representatives of an alternative political line in the Spanish political arena. According to Turrión, it is legitimate in this context to question sustainability of the neoliberal economic model in Europe and in the world at large. He presents a system neo-Marxist alternative and offers a fresh neo-Marxist perspective on the new challenges facing the world in the 21st century.
