Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to attempt an interpretation of Mishima’s literary procedure in the story “Patriotism” from the standpoint of the author’s suicide. Such an analysis foregrounds a most specific ethic and aesthetic barely known to readers in the West. Mishima’s ethical-aesthetic vision transpires not to be autochthonous but grounded in Yamamoto’s book Hagakure, thus indicating intertextuality rather than a clearly developed and profiled political or philosophical view. The text of “Patriotism” assumes its manifest importance only after Mishima’s suicidal act: reality confirms what is written, the anticipatory character of which, nevertheless, does not bring about an absolute identification of the truth of the text and that of the world
