Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the historiographical discussion of the literature and art history concerning M. K. Čiurlionis and analysis of his international exhibitions. The dependence of Soviet art criticism on political considerations precluded the formation of an objective opinion in Lithuania. Foreign researchers took interest in M. K. Čiurlionis not only in the theoretical aspect, but also sought to exhibit his creations in the West. The analysis of their correspondence with the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, carried out for the first time in Lithuania, and the discussion on the material concerned with M. K. Čiurlionis' exhibitions in Berlin, Bonn, Paris, Montreal, Warsaw and elsewhere argue this. The conclusion is drawn that the features of M. K. Čiurlionis' reception reflect the characteristic tradition of Lithuanian culture evident in the fine arts to search constantly not only for artistic but also for other meanings - symbolic, ideological, political. This artist was always regarded as a national hero in Lithuania. The two different approaches to M. K. Čiurlionis - as a patriotic symbol and as an exceptional personality in the international artistic life (the history of the creation of abstraction) has strengthened even more the status of this legendary figure. Any role as a rule is not useful for a productive reception. The article states that the international exhibitions and the appreciation of M. K. Čiurlionis in the West ought to force the art criticism in Lithuania to reconsider the value of M. K. Čiurlionis' creations and innovations.
