Summary/Abstract: This article gives an overview of the stage design on the Šiauliai stage and singles out the main tendencies, among which theatre modernisation is separated as principal. Modernisation is associated with the innovations in artistic direction and the emergence of a new generation of directors who have turned from realism to conditional and metaphorical theatre. In the course of its history, the Šiauliai Drama Theatre had permanent stage designers representing the older generation, such as Vytautas Palaima, Michailas Percovas, and Joana Taujanskienė. Later, the stage was dominated by the works of invited designers; among them especially notable are Dalia Mataitienė, Vytautas Kalinauskas, Galius Kličius, Adomas Jacovskis and the Latvian stage designers Andris Freibergs and Vladimir Kovalchiuk, who left an especially deep trace in the creative biography of the theatre.
