Formation and development of Vilnius conservatoire in 1940-1949

Summary/Abstract: As Lithuanians got Vilnius back, on the 1st of October 1940 a national high music school was established here. The main body of the school consisted of the education institutions that had been functioning in the city. As the most important of them, M. Karłowicz Conservatoire and Jewish Music Institute, followed the program of the higher schools, higher courses of the Conservatoire were incorporated into the structure of the high school. Thus, the preconditions for the activity of a higher music school appeared. The processes of development of the school and Vilnius Conservatoire established in 1945 on its basis were influenced by the complicated political situation in Lithuania.Two stages of the development of Vilnius Conservatoire should be marked: the first - 1940-1944 – actual activity and the second - 1945-1949 - de jure activity of the Conservatoire. In the view of school teachers and students, the Vilnius music school of 1940-1941 should be emphasised. The school during World War II (1941-1944) experienced a great upheaval, however, didn't stop its direct activities and cultural educative work. As Nazis closed Kaunas Conservatoire, the Vilnius music school following the same program actually took its functions, therefore, it is possible to state that a higher music school was functioning then in Lithuania. The period 1945-1949 can be mentioned as a period of activity of the school, reorganised and integrated into the Soviet Union higher education system. Together with Kaunas Conservatoire it gave birth to a new institution - Lithuanian State Conservatoire.
